Do you usually have to loosen or take off the idler pulley nut to help in replacing the belt?

On my sears garden tractor you have to use a block of wood to hold the belt tensioning pulley forward in order to get the belt on the engine pulley. I wouldn't think that you need to take anything apart, you may need a third hand to take some tension off the pulley.
